allosteric site

A regulatory site on an allosteric enzyme where a specific effector or modulator can reversibly bind. When bound, the modulator either activates (a positive modulator) or inhibits (a negative modulator) the enzyme by changing its shape. Some allosteric enzymes have a site for only one modulator (monovalent enzymes) while others have several allosteric sites (polyvalent enzymes).
