alpha-naphthol test

(Molisch's test) A standard procedure for detecting the presence of carbohydrates in solution. A small amount of alcoholic alpha-naphthol is added to the test solution in a test tube. Concentrated sulphuric acid is then poured slowly down the side of the tube. A violet ring forming at the junction of the liquids indicates a positive reaction.
