amphithecium

The outer layer of the young sporophyte in bryophytes, giving rise to the capsule wall, which, in many Bryales, differentiates a *peristome . In Sphagnum and Anthoceros, the sporoge-nous tissue develops from the amphithecium, whereas in other bryophytes it develops from the *endothecium .
