apophysis

The slightly swollen region between the seta and the capsule in a moss sporophyte. Its cells are rich in chloroplasts, there are numerous intercellular spaces, and the epidermis contains stomata, similar in structure to those of vascular plants. The apophysis is thus an active photosynthetic region and helps to nourish the developing sporogonium.
