appressorium

A hyphal structure, formed by many parasitic fungi, that serves to effect penetration of the host epidermis. It is flattened and closely pressed to the outer surface of the epidermis. From the undersurface a narrow infection hypha or penetration tube is pushed through into the cell or cell spaces below. This then expands into a haustorium or develops into hyphae.
