archegonium

The female sex organ of the bryophytes, pteridophytes, and most gymnosperms. It is normally produced within the maternal tissue and is related to the development of the terrestrial habit. It is made up of a narrow neck and a swollen base (or venter) that contains the female gamete. Compare antheridium.
