autolysis

The process of self-digestion undergone by organelles or cells when their useful life is completed.  It is effected by enzymes, primarily hydrolytic in character, that are produced by the cytoplasm. The process is believed to be under the control of growth substances. The products of the digestion are subsequently reabsorbed by the surrounding cells. See also autophagy , deliquescence.
