auxiliary cell

A specialized cell in the gametophyte thallus of some red algae, e.g. Polysiphonia, situated adjacent to the carpogonium. Following fertilization of the carpogonium the zygote produces filaments that grow towards and fuse with the auxiliary cell. This process appears necessary for the production of carpospores.
