axenic culture

(pure culture) A culture consisting of only one type of organism or cell. Axenic cultures are derived from pure parent cultures and grown under sterile conditions. Such uncontaminated cultures are necessary in investigating the properties of, a particular microorganism or cell type and in maintaining cultures of microorganisms over a long period of time.
