The study of *metabolism in prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells. As a discrete subject biochemistry has only existed for about 50 years, during which time a huge body of knowledge has accumulated. Originally biochemistry was concerned with cataloguing and investigating the biological occurrence and enzymatic reactions of a large number of organic compounds. However unifying patterns and principles have gradually emerged from the scattered body of facts and hypotheses.
