biuret test

A test for proteins in which sodium hydroxide is added to the test solution, followed by the careful addition of drops of 1% copper(II) sulphate solution. A violet colour indicates a positive result and is caused by the presence of peptide groups (NH-CO) in the proteins or peptides, which form a purple copper (II)-peptide complex. Free amino acids will not give a positive result.
