cardiac glycoside

Any of a group of steroid *glycosides characterized by their stimulative effects on the heart. Cardiac glycosides resemble *saponins in being diterpenes and by foaming in solution. They differ however in having a lactone ring attached at carbon 17 of the *steroid nucleus. An important commercial source is the foxglove (Digitalis purpurea), which yields digitonin.
