carinal canal

(protoxylem lacuna) A longitudinal channel in the stem internode of Equisetum (horsetail) and some of its fossil relatives, positioned radially opposite a raised stem ridge (carina). Each carinal canal is arranged on the inner side of a vascular bundle. The carinal canals apparently result from breakdown of *protoxylem and are believed to function in water conduction. Compare vallecular canal.
