cell division

The division of the nucleus (karyokinesis) followed by the division of the cytoplasm (cytokinesis). Two daughter cells are formed, each with a nucleus containing the same number of chromosomes as the mother cell (see mitosis). After reduction division (see meiosis) the nuclei of the daughter cells contain half the number of chromosomes of the mother cell.
