cell extension

The increase in cell length and volume that occurs a certain distance behind the apex following cell division. The process involves both the uptake of large quantities of water into the cell vacuole by osmosis (vacuolation) and the synthesis of new cytoplasmic and cell wall materials. Cell extension accounts for a far greater proportion of overall plant growth than cell division.
