columella

A small column, especially:
1.  The central portion of the root cap of certain roots in which the cells are arranged in longitudinal lines.
2.  The sterile tissue in the centre of the sporangium in mosses, liverworts, and fungi.
3.  A rodlike radial element in a pollen or spore wall.
