commensalism

A relationship between two living organisms in which one of the participants, (the commensal) benefits but the other neither benefits nor loses. For example, an epiphyte, by germinating on the upper branches of a tree, benefits from the increased supply of light but the tree simply acts as a support and is not affected either beneficially or adversely. See also amensalism , mutualism.
