contractile root

A specialized thickened root that serves to pull down a corm, bulb, rhizome, etc. to an appropriate level in the soil. Once the tips of the contractile roots are firmly anchored in the soil the upper region contracts, due to changes in the shape of the cortical cells. Prominent contractile roots are seen, for example, in Crocus and Allium species.
