correlative inhibition

The suppression of the growth of certain plant parts by a compound, such as a food substance or growth substance, produced in another area of the plant. An example is the production of a substance by the root system that suppresses the development of roots on the stem. If the influence of the root is removed a detached petiole or stem may subsequently produce a profusion of adventitious roots.
