deamination

The removal of an amino group from a compound. Breakdown of amino acids is by oxidative deamination. Glutamate, which is formed from many amino acids by transamination, is deaminated by the enzyme glutamate dehydrogenase, yielding α-ketoglutarate, ammonium ions, and reduced NAD or NADP.
