distichous

Describing a form of alternate leaf arrangement in which successive leaves arise on opposite sides of the stem so that two vertical rows of leaves result. It is seen, for example, in grasses. The term also describes a form of opposite leaf arrangement in which the pairs of leaves all arise in the same plane, again giving two rows of leaves.
