drupe

A fleshy indehiscent fruit in which the seed or seeds are surrounded by a hardened schlerenchymatous endocarp, as in wild cherry (Prunus avium) and holly (Ilex aquifolium). The endocarp may replace the testa in its protective role and may also play a part in the dormancy mechanism.
