evolution

The process by which genetic changes have taken place in populations of animals and plants over millions of years in response to environmental changes (see natural selection). Evolution has resulted in the formation of new species and, usually, an increase in complexity. Evidence for evolution comes from palaeontology, biogeography, genetics, and comparative anatomy and physiology. Compare creationism. See Darwinism.
