field capacity

The amount of water held in the soil by capillary action after excess or gravitational water has run off or percolated down to the water table. At field capacity the water potential of the soil is high. The percentage of water oeld at field capacity varies with soil texture, clay having a high field capacity and sand a low field capacity.
