genetic drift

(Sewall Wright effect) A change in *gene frequency that is due purely to chance, as opposed to natural selection. Genetic drift is more likely to occur in very small populations, since in such populations mating is likely to be nonrandom compared to matings in larger populations. See also fixation , founder principle.
