heterocyst

Any of the large cells that occur at intervals in the filaments of certain species of blue-green algae. They do not contain chlorophyll but do possess large amounts of DNA. Narrow pores at one or both poles are also a distinguishing feature. It has been suggested that heterocysts are involved in nitrogen fixation. Some also consider they may be vestigial reproductive cells.
