hybrid sterility

The reduced ability of some hybrids to produce viable gametes. This is caused by the absence of homologous pairs of chromosomes so that bivalents cannot form during meiosis. The resulting gametes are thus aneuploid. Hybrid sterility may be overcome by *polyploidy. Sterility does not necessarily correlate with poor growth or inviability. Indeed many hybrids show increased vigour (see heterosis).
