ion-beam etching

A method of specimen preparation for scanning electron microscopy in which the specimen is placed under high vacuum and the surface is then eroded by a beam of ions to expose subsurface features. The specimen is then coated and examined. The technique is very successful with some materials but produces artefacts by uneven erosion of the surface of others.
