Any monosaccharide with the carbonyl (CO) group at a position other than on the terminal carbon atom, so forming a ketone group. The simplest ketose is the three-carbon dihydroxy-acetone. Other ketoses include the five-carbon ribulose and xylulose and the six-carbon fructose and sorbose (see diagram).
