The period during the growth of microorganisms in culture when the cells are dividing rapidly and there is a huge increase in cell number. If the logarithm of cell numbers is plotted against time then a straight line is obtained on the graph. This period usually ends quite abruptly when nutrient levels fall, the pH of the medium changes, or toxic wastes build up. The logarithmic phase may be maintained by transferring cells to a fresh culture medium or by adding more nutrients to the existing medium. Compare lag phase. See also exponential growth.
