male sterility

A condition in which pollen production is prevented by mutation of one or more genes governing its formation. Male sterility has been employed by plant breeders as a method of ensuring cross pollination and hence F1 hybrid production. Male-sterile cultivars can be maintained by crossing ss (female parent) X SS (male parent) giving 50% ss and 50% Ss offspring (where s = male sterile).
