marsh

A region of vegetation where the water table is at or just beneath the soil surface. The soil is neither highly acid nor alkaline (compare bog , fen ). Common marsh plants are water lilies, reeds, sedges, and various grasses. A marsh is a stage in the development of a *climax vegetation from a *hydrosere.
