massulae

Mucilaginous extensions of the tapetum that surround the microspores and megaspores of water ferns of the genus Azolla. Four massulae surround the megaspore and are believed to aid buoyancy. A variable number of massulae are developed in the microsporangium, each of which contains a number of microspores. See also glochidium.
