mating strain

A group of organisms within a species that are characterized by not being able to interbreed with each other. However they are able to breed with members of other physiologically different but morphologically identical groups. Different mating strains are usually denoted by the symbols + and - since male and female forms cannot be distinguished as such. The differences are genetically determined. Compare physiological race. See heterothallic.
