mesosome

A structure found in bacterial cells formed by intrusions of the plasma membrane into the protoplasm. The respiratory enzymes are associated with the mesosome and it has the same function as the mitochondrion of eukaryotic cells. It is also attached to the DNA and is thought to control the separation of replicated DNA molecules during cell fission.
