monophyletic

Describing taxa arising from the diversification of a single ancestor, i.e. natural groups in a classification. In cladistics only taxa that contain all the descendants of a common ancestor are considered monophyletic. An example of such a taxon would be the monocotyledons. Taxa that contain some but not all the descendants of an ancestor are termed *paraphyletic. Compare polyphyletic.
