mounting

The final stage in the preparation of permanent slides for microscopical examination. The mount, which may be a section, wholemount, squash, or smear, is immersed in a mounting medium, usually a liquid that later solidifies. The medium permeates entirely through the specimen, leaves no air spaces, and does not support the growth of bacteria and fungi. Examples are glycerol, Canada balsam, and osmium tetroxide.
