night-break effect

A phenomenon exhibited by many plants whereby a period of light, administered artificially during the night, even if only of short duration or low intensity, will interfere with the normal flowering rhythm of the plant. The precise effects vary with the time that has elapsed since the light phase but generally, under short-day conditions, a light treatment inhibits flowering in *short-day plants and promotes it in *long-day plants. See photoperiodism.
