nucleic acid

A complex organic acid comprising polymers of *nucleotides formed by condensation reactions that establish phosphodiester bonds between the component nucleotides. There are two types, *DNA and *RNA. The acidic properties of these compounds are due to phosphoric acid, a component of nucleotides. They are called nucleic acids because they were first associated only with the nucleus. However they have subsequently been found in chloroplasts and mitochondria.
