nucleolar organizer

The region of chromosomal DNA that codes for ribosomal  RNA. Such  regions  can  be identified as secondary constrictions (the centromere being the primary constriction) often located towards the end of the chromosome. Like centromeres, nucleolar organizers are uncoiled regions of the chromosome and stain poorly. Nucleoli in the interphase nucleus have been shown to be associated with these regions.
