opposite

Describing a form of leaf arrangement in which the leaves arise in pairs at each node. If each pair is at right angles to the pairs above and below it, as is usually the case, the arrangement is termed decussate. If the leaf pairs all arise in the same plane a distichous arrangement results. Compare alternate, whorled.
