osmotic pressure

(Π) The force that has to be applied to a solution to prevent *osmosis occurring. It is equal to the *diffusion pressure deficit plus *turgor pressure. The term is going out of use because it does not take capillary and imbibitional forces into account, which can predominate in certain circumstances. Thus the term *water potential is now preferred.
