A form of recombination seen in the progeny of certain heterokaryotic fungi, which does not involve meiotic segregation. The sequence of events involved is termed the parasexual cycle and is as follows: two genotypically distinct nuclei in a hetero-karyon fuse to give a diploid heterozygous nucleus; the diploid nucleus multiplies alongside the haploid parent nuclei in the heterokaryon; a homokaryotic diploid mycelium is established from a diploid conidium; recombination occurs during crossing-over in mitosis; a haploid nucleus is formed by progressive shedding of chromosomes from the diploid nucleus.
