paratype

A specimen other than the *isotype or *holotype cited in the original publication of the name of a taxon. A paratype can also be one of a collection of *syntypes , following the selection of a *lectotype. Although of little significance nomenclaturally, paratypes are of considerable importance to the taxonomist, who may not be able to see other type material of a particular taxon. See also type.
