particulate inheritance

The determination of inherited characteristics by stable discrete factors that remain unchanged from one generation to another. Differences observed between parents and offspring are thus due to the recombination rather than modification of such factors. The particulate nature of inheritance was established with Mendel's work. Earlier theories formulated without experimental evidence tended to the idea that the characteristics of parents blended together in the offspring (see blending inheritance).
