persistent

Describing pesticides that take a long time to break down and become inactive. Such pesticides give longer protection than nonpersistent pesticides but are not suitable for use soon before harvest. Some are harmful to the environment as they accumulate in food chains and poison wildlife. Examples are the weedkiller MCPA and the insecticide DDT.
