phanerophyte

A plant with perennating buds situated on upright stems well above soil level. The buds are therefore potentially exposed to wind, extremes of temperature, and drought. Phanerophytes are thus usually found in temperate moist regions. They include trees, shrubs, herbaceous and succulent plants, and vines. See also Raunkiaer system of classification.
