photoheterotroph

A photosynthetic organism that requires a supply of organic compounds as a source of hydrogen. The purple nonsulphur bacteria are obligate photoheterotrophs and also require certain organic growth substances. Some of the purple sulphur bacteria are facultative photoheterotrophs in that under certain conditions they use organic acids rather than reduced sulphur compounds as a hydrogen source. See also heterotroph.
