plasmogamy

The fusion of the protoplasts of two haploid cells during *sexual reproduction. Plasmogamy is usually followed immediately by karyogamy (nuclear fusion), but in some ascomycetes and basidiomycetes the two processes are separated so that binucleate (*dikaryotic ) mycelia are formed.
