polarizing microscope

A microscope that uses polarized light to illuminate the specimen. Certain crystalline molecules transmit polarized light in a way that depends on the orientation of the molecules in the crystal. The technique has been used, for example, to investigate the arrangement of cellulose molecules in plant cell walls.
